GPS Tracking Question

How does GPS Tracking work?

The GPS tracking unit sends out a signal at time intervals depending on the subscription plan you have you have purchased. The message is sent out to the Telemax software to decode and understand the location of the tracking unit. The tracking’s system updates this position on the screen for you, giving you a detailed location and the route that your vehicle is taking in real-time.

What is GPS tracking?

GPS tracking consists of two sections, the first being the tracking device such as the Plug and Play tracker that is plugged into the vehicle and the software that interacts with it and displays it on the map and in reports.  The GPS tracking device in the car sends the position data to the Telemax server where the software then reads and displays the information in an easy to see format.

How will my staff respond to GPS tracking?

In most cases, employees are more receptive when they understand the reasons why you want to use it. If your goal is improving efficiency and safety by making business easier on mobile workers with less paperwork and phone calls then many will appreciate this effort rather than seeing their jobs in jeopardy as some may feel if they think that's not what management really wants from them.

Plug & Play Trackers

Can I use my OBD Plug & Play tracker in more than one vehicles?

Yes moving the tracker in-between cars is straightforward and quick. Simply unplug the device, locate the OBD2 port in the new vehicle and connect the tracker. Next, change the details of the vehicle in the Telemax software.

What is a OBD2 port?

Every truck or car on the road produced after 1996 is lawfully mandated to have the OBD-II Plug fitted. It usually can be located near the car's steering wheel close to the driver's knees. The OBD-II is an onboard computer inside your vehicle that observes emissions, speed, distance traveled, and additional data about your vehicle. It's will tell from the computer that there is an issue in the vehicle and normally display it on the vehicle dashboard. Traditionally, a mechanic would hook up a scan tool to the port to read any fault codes with your car. The OBD-II port for Telemax's Plug & Play tracker is used to power the device only.

Will the OBD Plug & Play tracker drain my car's battery?

The OBD2 Plug & Play tracker is specifically designed to minimise battery draining. The tracker can stay connected to a car for weeks without affecting your battery.

Will I know if the tracker is unplugged and can I hide it?

The OBD2 Plug & Play tracker has a backup battery built inside, so if the unit is disconnected from the main power of the vehicle the device will also send out an alert. The device comes with Y cable which means it can be hidden behind the dash if required.

How hard is it to install the tracking device?

Anyone can install the device and no installation experience is required, first find the OBD2 port in your vehicle which normal near the vehicle's pedals push the tracker onto the port and that's it.

What's the benefits of Plug & Play GPS Trackers?

The main advantage is that there no downtime to your fleet, no wires to connect and it will save you money on not having to employ a professional installer. This cost can sometimes be the same price as the GPS tracker.

My car doesn't have an OBD port.

If your car or truck doesn't have an OBD port, this may mean it was built before it became mandatory. You can still, however, purchase a harness kit that is wired to positive and ground which has, on the other end an OBD port for the GPS tracker to connect onto it.

Will it void my vehicle warranty?

There is a myth that Plug and Play GPS tracking devices may damage some electronics in the car and possibly even void the manufacturer's warranty.  The GPS tracker is in no way changing the vehicle mechanically and only receives power from the port.

Accesories

What is a OBD-II Y cable and do I need it?

An OBD-II Y cable can be used to connect two OBD-II devices to one vehicle at the same time. Why would I need to have two connected at the same time?  The first reason would be that your OBD-II port is in a location that might be in the way of the driver's legs and could damage the tracker. The second reason could be that you may want to put the GPS tracker in a more secure location, but make the spare OBD-II port available for your car service. And thirdly anyone looking for a tracker in your vehicle would see a regular OBD-II plug with nothing connected to it and automatically think there was no tracker in the car.

European Heavy Vehicle (FMS) Harnesses

Connecting the GPS Plug, and Play tracker to a European heavy vehicle using the FMS harness makes installation easy. All European truck manufacturers agreed to include a connector for the FMS interface from beginning of  2009. The first step in installing is connecting the GPS Plug and Play tracker on the OBD-II plug of the harness and the second is connecting the other end to the FMS plug. Installation can be done under 30 seconds. Major truck manufacturers are Daimler, MAN Truck & Bus, Scania, DAF Trucks, IVECO, Volvo Trucks and Renault Trucks.
